How to Use the GPA Calculator
Tracking your grades doesn't have to be complicated. Use our simple three-step process:
- Select Your Scale: Choose between a standard 4.0 scale (standard) or a weighted 5.0 scale (common for honors and AP classes).
- Add Your Courses: Enter the name of each course, the letter grade you received (e.g., A, B+, C), and the number of credit hours it is worth.
- Analyze Your GPA: Your semester GPA will update automatically at the bottom of the page in real-time as you add or modify courses.
The Mathematical GPA Formula
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average based on the credit weight of your classes. The formula is:
To calculate your total grade points, multiply the numerical value of your letter grade by the course credit hours. For example, if you get an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class, you earn 12 grade points. Sum up all course grade points and divide by the total credits.
Standard 4.0 GPA Grade Scale Table
| Letter Grade | 4.0 Scale (Unweighted) | Percent Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.00 | 93 – 100% |
| A- | 3.70 | 90 – 92% |
| B+ | 3.30 | 87 – 89% |
| B | 3.00 | 83 – 86% |
| B- | 2.70 | 80 – 82% |
| C+ | 2.30 | 77 – 79% |
| C | 2.00 | 73 – 76% |
| C- | 1.70 | 70 – 72% |
| D+ | 1.30 | 67 – 69% |
| D | 1.00 | 65 – 66% |
| F | 0.00 | Below 65% |
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA calculates your average on a standard 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty. An 'A' in a remedial class is worth the same 4.0 points as an 'A' in an Advanced Placement (AP) class.
Weighted GPA reflects class rigor. AP, IB, and dual-enrollment college courses are scored on a 5.0 scale (an 'A' is worth 5.0), and honors courses are scored on a 4.5 scale. This gives students taking challenging courses a higher cumulative average, often exceeding 4.0.
