The Psychology of Random Decision Making

When facing a decision between options you are genuinely indifferent about, using a random tool like a wheel spinner is actually a sound strategy. It eliminates decision fatigue, removes analysis paralysis, and forces you to commit. Research suggests that once the wheel stops, your reaction to the result often reveals which option you actually preferred — if you feel disappointed, you know you wanted the other one.

Popular Use Cases

  • 🍕 Where to eat — Add your favorite restaurants and let the wheel choose
  • 🎮 Game selection — Can't pick a game? Spin the wheel
  • 📚 Classroom tools — Randomly call on students or assign groups
  • 🏆 Raffle draws — Fair, transparent winner selection
  • Task assignment — Distribute chores or work items randomly

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the random decision wheel work?

The wheel uses a cryptographically seeded random number generator to determine a random spin distance. The wheel then animates with a realistic deceleration easing curve, and stops at a truly random position. Each segment has an equal probability of being selected.

Can I add my own options to the wheel?

Yes! You can add up to 12 custom options by typing in the input field and clicking Add (or pressing Enter). You can also remove any option by hovering over it and clicking the X button. Click "Reset to defaults" to restore the original food options.

Is the wheel truly random?

Yes. The spin distance is determined by Math.random(), which produces a uniformly distributed value. The final position is calculated from the exact decelerated stop angle, ensuring each option has an equal chance of being selected (assuming equal-sized segments).

What can I use the decision wheel for?

The wheel is great for picking restaurants, assigning tasks, choosing games, selecting movie/show choices, classroom random student selection, raffle draws, party games, determining turn order, and any scenario where you need a fair, unbiased random choice.

How many options can I add?

You can add up to 12 options. At 2 options, the wheel shows two equal 180° segments. At 12 options, each segment is 30°. The label automatically truncates if the text is too long for the segment.
